For nearly four decades, Apio Inc. has been at the forefront of growth in fresh produce innovation. In 1996, the company launched Eat Smart®, a new brand of fresh cut vegetables created to satisfy consumers’ desire for healthy, convenient foods. Eat Smart produce first appeared in vegetable mixes for open display (bulk bins) in grocery stores. Based on the popularity of these bulk mixes, Eat Smart introduced smaller, pre-packaged products that were even more convenient.
In the same year, Apio and Landec Corporation collaborated to market fresh cut produce using proprietary BreatheWay® specialty packaging technology, which extends freshness naturally and offers consumers excellent value for their produce dollar. Landec acquired Apio in 1999.
Apio, Inc. was born in 1979 with five celery growers and an idea — create a company that delivers on the promise to grow and ship the freshest, highest quality celery from the Santa Maria, California valley.
Over the years Apio, Inc. grew and introduced more vegetable varieties, while gaining a reputation for innovative vegetable party tray designs that brought healthy, convenient options to customers nationwide.
Today Apio, Inc. is one of the largest shippers of fresh-cut vegetables in the U.S. and Canada. Our company has long been focused on providing the best products possible to consumers by using our proprietary harvesting techniques as well as sophisticated packaging formats to preserve product freshness naturally. Like our commitment to sustainability, this emphasis on quality and innovation reflects the core values that inspire everything we do.
Our Eat Smart brand can be found in the refrigerated produce section of local grocery stores or in club stores within the U.S. and Canada.
